In June 2007 I began offering a headstock repair service on ebay and in the first six months repaired 65 headstocks. In 2008 I repaired 123 more machines and average 11 a month regularly. I learned even more doing so many in a short period of time. This allowed me to be able to distill my process and film it to teach the well equipped Shopsmith owner how to change their own bearings, etc. This resulted in my first video.

I enjoy carving and scrollsawing in my personal 20x24 workshop. I own and use a Shopsmith Mark V model 520 and a Shopsmith Mark V model 510.

I am an avid woodworker who loves Shopsmith equipment. I first used my father's 1962 "brownie"as a young teen. I always wanted my own but never got one until I inherited his after his death. It required a lot of work and had missing items so my first repairs were to it. I began buying other used Shopsmith outfits to obtain parts and accessories. I would fix them up and sell them and repeated the process 64 times. Doing this I got pretty good at fixing Shopsmith headstocks, bandsaws, jointers, jigsaws, etc. I repaired tools for other locals in my area as well.

There are 1.1 million Shopsmiths in the US.
A new Shopsmith Mark V currently retails for $2,999 or more. Used outfits average $500 to $1,000. Even with repairs figured in, they are a bargain. They usually come with lots of extras, too.
The typical headstock repair for parts and labor is $175 to $225.
