It is ALWAYS most economical to fix the headstock you have, unless it is a total basket case like after a fire or flood.
The typical headstock repair is $250 to $300 plus shipping.
A NEW headstock from SS is $1,200 to $1,400 plus shipping.
A USED headstock will cost you typically $200 to $400 plus shipping, and it will STILL need at least $200 of work from me. So you will always come out ahead by fixing the one you have.
Time wise, the average customer has their headstock back in two weeks including transit time. Ordering a new one could take much longer, and a used one could take just as long waiting for the auction to end, the seller to ship, and transit time.
What does it cost?
Labor plus the cost of parts and return shipping to you.
My base labor rate is $125. Add $50 if I need to open up the motor for bearing work or other serious problem.
I charge parts at their cost to me, not doubled. When appropriate, I supply good used parts at half the cost of new. Sometimes this is required because some parts are no longer made. Bearings, belts, electric cords and switches are always new.
Return shipping is based on distance and weight. It varies from $35 close to Virginia, to $70 to the West Coast.
The average repair is $250 to $300 plus the return shipping. This is very inexpensive divided out over the years of service the machine will provide.
How long does it take?
Turnaround time is almost always 1 week. I stock enough parts to cover 10 to 20 repairs, a typical month, so I am not held up with parts delays.
I receive your headstock, typically tear it down and inspect it the following day and email you my report. After you have paid for the balance, I'll repair it and ship it out the following Tuesday or Friday. Paying via Paypal is the fastest way. Money orders delay the process while we wait for the money in the mail.
